In the session titled “The Quest for Decent Work in the Platform Economy,” the legal status and search for social security guarantees of digital platform workers (gig workers)—one of the most contemporary and dynamic areas of labor law—were thoroughly discussed.
The event was moderated by Prof. Dr. F. Burcu Savaş Kutsal (Faculty Member at Bahçeşehir University, Department of Labour and Social Security Law), while Asst. Prof. Dr. Hazal Tolu Yılmaz (Faculty Member at Galatasaray University, Department of Labour and Social Security Law) participated as the keynote speaker. During the event, the definition of digital labor platforms, the precariatization encountered in this sector, and the rigid control mechanisms of algorithmic management over employees were detailed. Furthermore, references were made to the 'presumption of employment status' regulations in comparative law, the BTK and Road Transport regulation amendments along with UBER decisions in Turkey, and the principles of the ILO's Convention No. 193, which stands out as the first international standard. Emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of platform workers to ensure a decent working environment, structural problems in practice and potential solution proposals were discussed.
